Caught something on the Discovery Channel last night about human's 'Sixth Sense'. It looked at how we take in far more about the world than we are consciously aware off and that when people act on hunches or gut feelings, they are in fact acting on this unconsciously gathered information. The program went on to look at how experiences are remember visually and that trying to put them into words can effect are ability to recall that information. See Words get in the way: talk is cheap, but it can tax your memory which points to the fact that out visual memory is more primitive than the conscious, language driven, mind. This suggests that the ability to coordinate the visual memory and conscious mind is a skill that can be trained and improved.

I think you have too much time on your hands!

I saw the same programme, it got me thinking: I'm a DJ, me & some friends get together and play records sometimes. One friend in particular talks alot while mixing & often makes mistakes, while the rest of us keep quiet and manage OK. I think this is an example of verbal overshadowing at work as the DJ in question talks about what she's doing as she does it, stopping her subconcious from performing correctly....

Malcolm Gladwell covers the subject from the psychological perspective in, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking; while Squire Rushnell covers the subject from a supernatural standpoint in, When God Winks: How the Power of Coincidence Guides Your Life. Although Rushnell's piece is certainly more romantic, the antithesis is so much more grounded in research.
